Bee ident please

Im new to this forum and I have seen a bee i cant identify. Help please

It is about half an inch long and triangular shaped with black and orange stripes going BACKWARDS from the head to tail and then crossways on the back. There were two one on top of the other sat by my pond and did not move when i gently nudged them

Dont have a camera so any ID would help.

Its not furry and is more flat than honey bees.
I can identify honey and bumble bees and its not like them at all.

If you have a link to a site that I can trawl through for hours please supply..

The plot holders children have been asking " Whats its name " so I need to be able to educate the future.

Google "Common Stone Fly" to see if it fits the bill; there seems to be quite a variety of the same.

Ah I think you’re right. Lots of people think these are hornets.
Anybody seen Maybugs this year?

That's what it sounds like, a hover fly, Helophilus pendulus? Mating and going to lay eggs in the pond. I like its transaltion - "dangling marsh-lover"

Yes. Not as many as last year but there are lots at my test apiary
