This "shook swarm in Spring" issue has cropped up again in my association - people talking about plans to do it this April. It seems that quite a few experienced beekeepers do it too, annually, which vexes me.

The implication is that any comb over a year old is riddled with bad things that harm bees? I thought that pathogens were present all the time anyway, and it needs some stressor like varroa to trigger the manifestation of disease.

It "feels wrong" but that is not a very scientific argument!

!

I renew combs when sun does not shine through the comb.

That " destroy the combs" is a disease to which we do not have any medicine.
No need to extract then or sell honey.

My view is simple I will never do it. I have no idea who is teaching it but I suspect the foundation makers love them.

PH

Yes agreed PH would not do it, if you want to get the bees into a new box simply add 1 on top when needed and add a little feed job done. As soon as shes up slip an excluder in between and your sorted. I think some are looking at it for varroa as well but if you winter treat in most circumstances they are good to go for the season.
