Having done a little googling it appears:

1. Their life cycle and general facts aren't fully studied.

2. Not all the colonies migrate only the ones at higher altitudes. Those at lower altitudes rear brood all year round.

So perhaps the migrants don't nest and rear brood but are in areas where there is enough to forage on.

According to the commentary, we were looking at bees that were about to migrate (because we were at high altitude - 1500m?) and we saw the guys cutting off ("bright yellow" - why? - another loose end :rolleyes:) brood comb before cutting off the honey. Thanks for the links - not read them yet - going on hols tonight, so something to enjoy :)
