I can assure you they do considerable harm ..
The hive I had ant issues with had struggled through the winter, and came out barely alive.. they then struggled to make any head way until I killed the ants off..
They then went from the 2 frames they'd been struggling to maintain to close on 7 in 3 weeks.
Every time I went to the hive I had to dump an few thousand ant eggs and a few hundred ants off the crown board, dumping them some 50ft away.
So don't underestimate the stress effects even garden ants can have. Wood ants are a completely different kettle of fish and can destroy a colony in a few hours if they decide to have a go at it.

the indoor ant gel blocks .

Can you please identify the gel blocks you mention as we have ant problems indoors and need to get rid. Thanks. pm preferred if poss.

I use Maxforce Quantum for ants, it contains the active ingredient imidacloprid. The label says can't be used on soil or flower beds but can be used on patio and around sheds, raw material storage areas, so may be suitable.

Imidacloprid is excellent stuff, the workers take it back and feed queen thus killing whole colony, it's takes a bit of time though.
