I can assure you they do considerable harm ..
The hive I had ant issues with had struggled through the winter, and came out barely alive.. they then struggled to make any head way until I killed the ants off..
They then went from the 2 frames they'd been struggling to maintain to close on 7 in 3 weeks.
Every time I went to the hive I had to dump an few thousand ant eggs and a few hundred ants off the crown board, dumping them some 50ft away.
So don't underestimate the stress effects even garden ants can have. Wood ants are a completely different kettle of fish and can destroy a colony in a few hours if they decide to have a go at it.
