On instruction that I want him to build a solar oven, OH has come home with the perfect size mesh, but it is made of aluminium, somewhere in my grey matter I feel that it has been mentioned not to use aluminium for straining honey or wax, can someone confirm this for me please.

It can give the wax a greenish tinge if you're not careful - but I must say I have a BFO aluminium bain marie that I use for the first part of my wax cleaning.

I'd read that somewhere - can't remember where though.

Yeah, all those years my mother fed me rhubarb stewed in her aluminium preserving pan, I don't stand a chance.

Will send OH on stainless mission instead then, I don't really want green wax for my first attempt. Luckily he does work in the steel construction industry :)

How long will my cleaned cappings store, prior to melting and how should I store them?

if they are cappings and have been cledaned - no need for a solar melter, just melt them to 70 degrees in a bain marie and fine filter.
Ha ha don't have a bain marie either, but easier and quicker to come by than waiting for the solar oven!

How fine is fine in the filter world?

I put the wax in a plastic measuring jug in a saucepan of boiling water, when it has melted you can lift it out and pour directly in to a filter or mould depending on what stage you are.
