Hi All,

Hoping to get some advice on a damaged queen.

We picked up a colony from a friend and were getting it into position when i spotted an unmarked queen on my other half! I managed to get her inside a marking tube but as soon as i had we spotted she was damaged (i.e. missing back legs). She could still move around but clearly not particular well!

Upon placing her back onto the frames she stayed completely still whilst the workers surrounded her (not balling simply inspecting). She eventually slowly moved down into the hive.

What are peoples thoughts? Is she doomed?

The bees will decide, I once cut the rear leg off a queen while clipping her wing. I assumed they would supercede her but she carried on laying for another 2 years before I retired her to a nuc. She was a great layer and her daughter is the same.

Back legs are still present but it looks like she is missing the lower parts of the middle legs. Can be the result of a queen fight as the other queen sometimes manages to bite pieces off legs or antennae. Also if a queen survives balling I have noticed that occasionaly she has lost a bit of leg.

Yes, I counted six legs but looks like part of the middle left leg missing. She will probably manage quite well but the bees will decide...let them get on with it.

appreciate the quick response guys and clearly apologies for the MASSIVE photos!

Tried to resize but clearly didn't work!

Hope she's ok - will give it a week given the recent move and inspect and hopefully all is well :) thanks again

Don't complain about the pictures they were excellent. I have never found a way to get the actual picture on a thread, I always end up with one of those silly thumbnail things. Any tips?

If you upload your images to your OneDrive you can get an embed link and resize to suit. Just paste it into the message using image tags and you're good!

There are other online image hosting options of course. I couldn't get it to work nicely with my Google Drive. Can't say I spent a lot of time trying though.

Nothing wrong with her Anthony..just as i presumed from the original picture..just relax and let her do her thing..;)

Edit to add them marking cages are dangerous as you have nothing to stop you applying to much pressure to the Queen..the twist and turn marking cages are much safer as they have a stop lip on them the same depth as your average Queens abdomen so you have little chance of damaging her..the same twist and turn cage is also brilliant for clipping Queens..
