Seeking out allies and repelling attack from each other and other Genera.
Attractants for pollinators and seed distributors, poisons for grazers and competing species of plants.
E.g. the deadly combat on the Seregeti between Grass and acacia trees

The Trees have enlisted ants to sting grazers. However, the grass have enlisted Elephants to uproot the trees

Thinking sideways, there could be something in this for the pollination crowd. If you started the bees off with a bit of caffeinated syrup they might concentrate their efforts to that locality?
