Looking for a beekeeper near Blackburn

A friend of mine lives in Mellor, a rural area in Lancashire, near Blackburn. He has a large garden and after reading about the plight of the honeybee is interested in having bees. He doesn’t really have the time to look after them himself, but would obviously be a keen observer. Does anybody...

Where can I get 20 lites buckets from ?

I want a few 20 litre size buckets and remember seeing a post here somewhere advising where 2nd hand buckets were readily available. They are not for honey, so used buckets would be OK thank you for any advice given !

How can somebody deter bees ?

It is quite common to grow French marigolds among vegetables, especially in greenhouses to deter some bugs .... do bees like these ?

How can somebody deter bees ?

I have just taken over an allotment and the neighbour has several bee hives. They have never bothered me, but 2014 will be my first growing season, so I'll just have to wait and see. My other neighbour hates the bees, having been stung last year a few times. Is there anything he could rub on...

In urgent need of hive space : Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshore

A friend of mine will soon be moving to Hebden Bridge, in West Yorkshire, into a property without a garden. (Estimated moving date being mid October) Unfortunately the person has 3 colonies of bees, so she is in need of a suitable location within a few miles of her new home. A private garden...

Pros and Cons of using a Deep Brood Box

What are the pros and cons in buying a hive with a deep, 14 x 12 brood box, rather than the normal, sized box. Surely it would be easier, in a lot of respects than the 'brood and a half' option. Thank you for any advice given.

I am looking for an Isle of Man beekeeper ... perhaps wanting extra hive space

I am looking for a beekeeper on the Isle of Man, who is perhaps looking to have one or two extra hives. A colleague in Peel, is offering space in a private garden for up to two hives. The beekeeper would ideally live nearby, although judging by the size of the island, any resident beekeeper...

Ok, what on earth are they playing at??

Wouldn't a head torch be a useful idea ... at least it would be easier to use, if your two hands were holding a frame. I could be talking utter b......t, as I don not as yet have a hive, but as a backpacker, I know how useful such an item can be.

Choice of Gloves ... for a newbie

Thanks for all the replies to my posting “Choice of Bee Suit” … I think I have decided on the one piece outfit, with the round hat, as opposed to the fencing style. Two members of a recent course, kept having to pull the mesh off their faces. OK a baseball hat underneath might help, maybe even...

    Choice of Bee Suit

I had a look a this Youtube video ... some good points raised by 'hedgerowpete' Made me think, with the hat/ veil combinations, the lack of padding on a hat could be a problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0H5YS7cioQ Now, I didn't mean to do that ... having the Youtube clip embedded in my...

    Choice of Bee Suit

On the course, I just wore a pair of jeans, then an old pair of waterproof trousers on top ... I taped up the pocket slots for week two onwards, having been stung on week one ... Bee crawling through pocket slit onto my stomach was one hell of a shock, for the bee I imagine, as well as me.

    Choice of Bee Suit

I recently attended a beekeeping course, and made use of a pretty thin, beekeeping jacket, hat and veil, which was provided ... It seemed OK. Due to my ideal spot for a hive (singular) I now realise my garden wouldn't be suitable in the long run, with perhaps several hives. With this in mind, I...

    Hive on a roof

Thank you for all the replies. It is actually a church roof, so weight shouldn't be a problem. There is a door on to the roof too

    Hive on a roof

Oh, never thought of that option ... Thanks ! Made me think .. Why bother with the 6" roof, but I suppose if it is decided to add some insulation, this would be better.
