    What are my options?

Many thanks... I'll keep at it!!

    What are my options?

I'd appreciate some thoughts... I joined this fantastic hobby last year with a purchased nuc. All went well... and I was quite proud of getting the ladies thru the worst summer for some time in good order. However, they didn't make it thru the winter. A mentor took a look at what was left and...

    Still learnin'...

60,000 bees outside a bee suit no problem; one bee inside... now that's a sphincter testing moment.

    Bee space

Thanks friendlies!! I think I have a duff BB. The frames are flush with the top and bttm resulting in an issue when I try to put a super under it. Off to the shop... :-)

    Bee space

Forgive me... for I am novice... Should there be a gap between the top of a BB frame and the bottom of a super frame?? Cheers, Mark

    Anaphylaxis attack

As a local responder for the ambulance service I agree with the above... and would stress that AS SOON as you sense something out of the ordinary then 999. Seconds count in this situation and it can go badly wrong with very little notice. Get a crew mobile to you at the EARLIEST opportunity...

Thanks PH! I'm going to invite my mentor round this weekend also! :-)

    Does pollen = nectar

LOL... I set up a large bucket with some bricks when they first arrived because I was worried they'd be thirsty... turns out I should've set up an umbrella instead!

    Does pollen = nectar

Thanks for your replies. This was initially a five frame nuc. Now housed in a national (with one frame removed and replaced with a dummy to help a novice with inspections). They have drawn all but one frame and have brood on all but two frames. Right now they have some stores because they've...

    Does pollen = nectar

Folks, I'm new... so be gentle! I've been feeding my 8 week old nuc intermittently based on their level of stores over the last few weeks. And they have been duly drawing comb and increasing in number. I was wondering if when I see pollen arriving I can presume that nectar is also coming in. Or...

    Sniffer Bees??

Curious as to how they scale down a dogs harness to fit... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18496516 :)

    Honey bees and children?

Re gloves for children... I've found childrens gardening gloves in the garden centre.

    Honey bees and children?

I have a 3 and 5 year old... the eldest is learning so much about the bees as well as how to behave around and respect them. She has her own suit and nags endlessly when she knows we might be doing an inspection. It's becoming routine for her to sit and watch the comings and goings and spot the...

    First honey harvest!

Very cool! Just done my first inspection so slightly jealous at your advanced stage! ;-)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

What did I do??? My first solo inspection!!! Soooo exciting! Bees calm, not even smoked. From the nuc i installed 6 days ago they have drawn one and a half frames of comb. My five year old daughter joined once I'd established they were calm (in her bee suit) and squeeled with excitment when...

    Bees clustering under mesh floor

Liam, How many bees? Are we talking hundreds? I have a dozen or so doing that and just presumed they wanted to cool down yet stay in contact with the queen!?! Mark

    Here we go...

This is the oldest (5), who remained captivated for 10 minutes!

    Here we go...

If it was up to my daughters they'd just follow the signs they've placed around the garden pointing to the flowers!!
