Clearing bees Up instead of Down?

Has anyone ever tried this? That is using a clearer board on a hive that is reversed, with honey supers put below, clearer board, then brood box (queenless split in my case) and an entrance at top. It might sound strange but I'm reviewing what we do at harvest from the point of view of reducing...

    Pesticide incidents

I had a small incident 2 years ago, a big incident last year and now 2 big incidents this year. Is anyone else seeing a similar pattern?

BBKA Convention - OSR nectar and neonics

I didn't go to Harper Adams but very keen to know what the guy from Keele Uni. talked about as one of my apiaries was involved in the research. Can anyone give a summary? Thanks. (They came along on various dates and took nectar from the OSR flowers - didn't know that was so easy. They also gave...

I thought I'd heard it all

Phone call from farmer this evening. "A chinook helicopter landed in the field today and blew all the lids off your hives. The bees are a bit upset at the moment".

    Ouch

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/where-s-the-worst-place-for-a-bee-sting--one-scientist-found-out---172312645.html#xNz1LXr I agree about the inside of the nostril. Not had the excitement of being stung in all the places mentioned.

    Paying European suppliers

I just paid an invoice in euros to Fritz using a webservice called Transferwise. It was very slick, and saved me about 2.5% of the amount which Lloyds bank would have charged me as their exchange rates are much worse. Worth a look if you're doing anything similar. The only slight hitch, money...

    Honey and Lemon

Okay you all know about this anyway. I'd just forgotten how effective it is. The way I've been doing it: a big dessert spoonful of honey and a thick slice of lemon in a mug of boiling water. I almost feel human again. (The irony is my cold was on the mend until yesterday I went out in cold...

    Slotted top bars

Anyone ever used these? The top bar has a slot cut along it's length, presumably to drop some foundation into. I've never seen these for sale but I've found them in old hives that turn up occasionally. Pros and cons? And why have they fallen out of popular use?

    Feeding warning

Just off on hols shortly so last minute checks on bees. Standard procedure normally for me is remove supers 1st half of August and give a gallon of syrup straight away. (Then further feed later in September as required). But lots of hives are getting dangerously light already. I'm having to...

Top Bar bait hive in the Wyre Forest anybody?

Today I've been handed what appears to be a bait hive with top bars, recovered from the Wyre Forest in Worcestershire. It seems it had been placed without permission in an area that has now been cleared. If the owner would like to contact me with a good description of it I'll happily return it...

    Spray kill?

I dropped 10 hives at a new apiary 5 days ago. Today I returned for inspections. One colony had a pile of dead outside - no crawlers, all well dead I'd guess a few days. Inside was sparsely populated with bees but 9 frames of brood. I found the clipped queen. No queen cells anywhere. Lots of...

    Bees on Sycamore today

I can't tell if they're working it for pollen, nectar or both - too high to see properly - but today they seem to be preferring it to the rape only a few hundred yards away.

    Packages - I feel like a beginner

Any advice/explanation welcome. I made up 6 packages on Saturday, to be installed Sunday or Monday. To get the syrup in on Saturday evening I shook the box so they fell to the floor. It was getting colder by this point but I didn't notice straight away. Anyway, they didn't immediately recluster...

What if small hive beetle comes?

What if FERA destroy your bees if SHB is found in one or more of your apiaries? It's not like EFB or AFB that are either small scale issues or non-destruction. Would they pay compensation? Or do we need insurance?

    Essential Apiary Equipment?

I'm jealous. This belongs to my brother in law. I'm thinking forget II - strap your virgins to this baby and take them on a joyride.
