    “Indian” Summer next week?

With sunshine and temperatures up to 24/25C next week in the South West, I’m considering leaving the last few supers on in the hope of offsetting a rather dismal summer honey crop. Opinions, risks/potential benefits? Over to the collective wisdom of the Forum…

    Rhombus Clearer Board Question

Has anybody tried clearing two supers at once with the above? If so how did you get on, and how long did it take? Many thanks.

Hive appears to be Queenless on first Spring Check

About 5 seams of bees, but no brood whatsoever. What are my options?

    Thornes' Nasanov Swarm Lure

I was in the process of stocking up odds and ends for the coming season when this caught my eye. Has anybody tried the stuff - and if so, how did you get on? I usually do quite well with old brood comb with a touch of lemongrass oil, but figure it might be worth a punt. Thoughts anyone? Many thanks.

Mixing Soft Set - Spiral or “Propeller”?

Currently using a low speed mixing drill with a Thornes propeller mixing attachment. Are there any advantages to the spiral type mixer - or doesn’t it matter?

    Overwintering a Maisemore Poly Nuc

A quick one for any Maisemore poly nuc owners out there. I have a very small, very late (end Sep) swarm in a Maisemore 14x12 poly nuc (with associated small Miller type feeder that I am looking to nurse through to spring) - more in hope than expectation. They are Q+ with brood. Later this...

    Move of Apiary..

Long story short. I'm having to move one of my apiaries about 800m tomorrow and have closed all hives down earlier this evening. Hives are poly 14x12s with mesh floors. Weather for the next 3 days is light rain, breezy and mild. Question: how long should I leave them closed up before...

    Lavender Honey

For planning purposes, how many hives would an acre of lavender support?

    A Mystery....

I don’t mark or clip my queens - it’s a personal preference. Today on a routine inspection of one of the hives, I found a 2019 (green marked) Queen. Had a good look, but couldn’t find another. Any suggestions/ideas how she got there?

    Thornes Ventilated Suit

Not wishing/intending to provoke the usual bee suit debate, but would anyone care to review, or offer any thoughts and opinions on the above? Thank you.

Do you provide drinking water for your bees?

Apparently some do, others don't. Curious to see what the situation out there is.

    Combining Colonies

Just back from initial inspections at my out apiary. One hive is Q- (no sign of the Q and zero brood, drone or otherwise - it has plenty of stores). I would like to combine it with a Q+ hive and split again later in the season. Unfortunately the nearest suitable hive is about 15 feet away. Is...

    Queens by post..

How long can you reasonably keep them before introducing them to the hive? They were posted yesterday - arrived noon today.

Splitting after uniting a Q- hive with a very strong Q+ hive?

I will be inspecting a weak, possible Q- hive later today. If I decide to combine it with a strong Q+ hive (after testing with a frame of eggs/larvae), what is the best way to revert to two Q+ hives further downstream? I don’t have another suitable site over 3 Km away, nor do I have a spare Q...

Advice on making splits later this year

I am looking to increase my hives from 2 to 4 this year and, at the same time, keep my honey production to a maximum (this will be the first year I will be taking any honey off them). Current set up is two 14x12 poly, 2017 F1 "Buckfast" - currently overwintering nicely. Spare kit is an...

    Wanted: Beekeeping in Britain by R O B Manley (1948 - Faber)

Trying to find/buy a copy of this book with remarkably little success. Does anyone have a copy they are prepared to part with, or can you point me in the right direction? Have just finished his book "Honey Farming" and couldn't put it down, beautifully written - echoes of a gentler age...
