That's exactly what I do. A few taps on the side of the cap with a hive tool is all it needs to remove the cap if it sticks a bit. I've never had a problem with the tube getting bunged up and been using this method for a couple of years now. I let the whole thing get really hot before starting...

I'm also quite near you and I'm finding the same. I had a good spring and early summer crop but the last few weeks nothing. I usually leave them at least a full super on each hive for the winter but I've ordered syrup as it looks as if I may have to feed them. Masses of pollen though. this year.

I too would recommend the gas vap, really quick and easy to use, no heavy battery to cart around and seems to be very effective. I've had practically no varroa drop this season after each hive had 3 treatments at intervals in December.

I have a similar situation but my source of eggs from my other hives would take at least 40 mins to transfer from one apiary site to the queenless site. What's the best way to do this?

Could you not move the ones from your garden to your other existing site, wait a couple of weeks and then move them to the new site? I moved a couple of hives about 200 yards, left them shut in for 48 hours and all was ok however that was a month ago. I did leave a poly nuc at the original site...

No HB within flight range so sure it's not that and also it's a really bright yellow colour

All our hives had worker bees with bright yellow on their backs, mainly the thorax. Looks like someone gone mad with a queen marking pen. Any ideas what plant the pollen could be from? We're in Sussex between the sea and the downs, not near any streams or rivers.

You can get a bright pink posca pen which is really easy to see, use this instead of red. One of my pink marked queens is in her third season and is still well marked.....yes I know it's not right for the year!
