Photo of bees moving larvae about

Muswell I am not sure what they were doing. When I pulled up the frame to look at it they were pulling the pupae across the frame and whether, when the orientation of the frame changed, they decided to go with gravity and so pushed it into the empty cell? DrS sorry for the incorrect...

Queen flew off when trying to catch her

The second traumatic incident for me today was with a small swarm that I got about 4 weeks ago. They have settled in nicely into their brood box and the queen has been laying well for around 3 weeks. When we inspected today we decided to mark her. When we went to get her off the frame she...

Photo of bees moving larvae about

Thanks Kaz With a new queen, more than one egg in a cell is not unusual as the queen is still learning her craft. The house bees tidy things up. I did not realise though that larvae is moved around. They were dragging it across the frame and then popped it into the cell you can see. It did...

Photo of bees moving larvae about

When doing an inspection today of a cast swarm nuc we caught the bees moving a larvae about. As you can see in the foreground the queen is still getting used to laying as there are 3 eggs in one cell. Do they often move larvae around?

Double Brood chamber, good Q upstairs, DLQ downstairs

Can it possible that a hive on a double national can have two queen? If you look that the following photos you can see what the bees have done, or rather what I have let them do. I had a double BC through the winter and did an AS at the end of April. With the weather being bad the queen did...

found a sad hive next door!!!!

My view is don't touch it. Even opening it may be illegal. Leave it to the bee inspector and if they think it is being neglected let them take it away. You may feel you have first shout on it because you reported it, but there are probably ways the bee inspector has to deal with things.

    Distance from property

This is our second year and we have not had any problems. I would prefer a bit further away but as long as you don't stand in thier flight path there is no issue. I can mow the grass up to a foot around the hives but right up to the hives I do put a bee suit on. If however their temprement...

Price of camera is irrelevent and if you look at these photos http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11083&highlight=drinking you can get stunning shots with £150 camera, often you just need to have the camera.

Leave a a full super of honey for autumn?

Last winter I left a super on the hive with 6 or 7 frames of honey but I only did this because in my ignorance I treated with thymol with a super on and it was severely tainted. (lesson learned). However I left the super on at the bottom. As Huntsman stated it is best not to put it on top...

    What stops germination?

From Wiki:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fertilisation Flowering plantsAfter the carpel is pollinated, the pollen grain germinates in a response to a sugary fluid secreted by the mature stigma (mainly sucrose). From each pollen grain, a pollen tube grows out that attempts to travel to the...

6 weeks old AS has been overrun with wasps....help please!

Last year when my contact feeder leaked and the syrup made its way to the edge of the crown board I had hundreds of wasps around, which I vacuumed up, then a quick blast of fly spray. I was told I was bonkers, but it would seem I am not alone.

High level of wasp activity . . .

It would seem the wasps have made a sudden appearance as there is another thread on them http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11575 No wasps at home yet but at my mother's where I have 3 colonies there was a lot of wasp activity. The colonies are small swarms being built up so I...

6 weeks old AS has been overrun with wasps....help please!

For an effective wasp trap (for nothing) get one of the small bottles of Coke, cut the top off to form a funnel and invert into the bottle after putting jam and water in the bottom bit. The wasps can get in but can't get out.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Why did I make the floor as I did? I looked at this http://www.edinburghbeekeepers.org.uk/downloads/diy_open_mesh_floor-graham-white.pdf ... … and saw the side rails and front piece in 3.5” x1.5”; that is big timber. I therefore thought it over engineered. I admit I experiment and ask myself...
