Deformed Wings - Treatment - Part absconding to neighbour

Discovered Deformed Wings in a colony that was not progressing as others were. Vaped and found a heavy mite fall. We cannot get MAQS here at present, so applied ApiGuard which resulted in a very severe fall. As usual the bees dislike the ApiG and spend time on the landing board … However, I...

    Drone Brood only being impacted....

Ian, thank you for reply ... will take a pic next visit... On thinking it through, perhaps frosts and low temps allowed the brood cover to shrink exposing the outer rim of Drone to suffer ... purely conjecture on my part and will take a pic for opinion. P

    Drone Brood only being impacted....

I have noted in two colonies what looks like Chalk Brood but impacting Drone only … Cells appear torn down and drone larvae debris (like dried out CB) left. Worker brood (extensive) not impacted. I have vaped recently but would imagine any negative effect to would cover both Drone/Worker larvae...

    Castellations & Brace

Many thanks for the group’s very helpful advice/replies. I have passed a precis of same to the new beek in question. He has decided to remove the castellations for now, allow the bees draw the frames and then reinstate castellations to better effect as per recommendations. Good one! Regards, P

    Castellations & Brace

Marking a Q for beginner yesterday noted he is using castellations in super with Hoffman frames. The space between frames appears rather broad and bees in drawing out, are ‘naturally’(??) bridging between the opposing frames (a bloc). It will prove a nightmare of ‘forced separation’ come...

Hi Nick, best from wet and very windy (storm) Ireland ... Some of my bees may blow your way ....:)

    Starvation but refuse feed

Similar problem with Nucs ... did the usual enticements to draw up to feeder and indeed, up they came but stubbbornly refused the offerings .... Ended up giving them fondant and will nurse through winter. Other than being deficient in stores they appear happy and where temperature allows are...

    Hive Alive

Hive Alive ratio: 2.5ml per litre (or 1/2 teaspoon). Can also 'drench' impacted colonies. I worried this season as Nucs absolutly refused it and maintained their position on the matter [earlier post]. That said, 7 of 8 refused Thymolated syrup as well so no reflection on HA. The full hives took...

    Second brood box removal?

I simply remove the bottom box (usualy light/empty of stores etc., a this time.) and shake the bees on any frames back into the now x 1 box unit. Whereas most of mine are winter ready I do still have a double box & Super. Twice I have opened to remove the bottom box but it still contains brood...

    Refusing Syrup so Fondant?

“very Odd” … absolutely! All hives were initially reluctant post Apiguard treatment to feed but got into stride and are now draining syrup down. However, Poly Nuc’s in the main, remain stubbornly reluctant with significant mortality rate at syrup line and the two in question now dangerously low...

    Refusing Syrup so Fondant?

To cut to chase: I am having difficulty in getting some Nucs to take down syrup. I am using Maizey and Paynes feeders. The bees simply appear to die on contact with the liquid and the remainder standoff. At first, I thought it was a commercial additive in the syrup, but a similar pattern applies...

    Marking and clipping queens

    Mark but don't clip.

Smoker...should it be used at entrance before inspections?

Whereas will always have a smoker to hand I find mild water spray to be less antagonising to the bees.

Thymolated Syrup ... Isopropyl Alcohol Strength

Many thanks for clarificiation(s) Mod's.... EHB when treating infection you use dosage of 5ml. Is this to the litre or the gallon (imperial) as per Hivemaker?

Thymolated Syrup ... Isopropyl Alcohol Strength

Reading through the formula for Thymolated syrup in technical section. Have Isopropyl 99% Alcohol :p. Is this the strength envisaged? Would'nt leave us too healthy :)

    Dead drones

Ahhh every day we learn ... noted this corralling or 'kettling' in hives ... many thanks for the reasoning.

    Gas Vape

Thanks, much obliged JBM .... also for the advice re Re-queening and getting new Q in soonest rather than going through the throes of awaiting 'hopelessness' ... Very helpful.

    Gas Vape

When using Gas Vape is it necessary to seal off all hive openings as when using Varrox Vaporiser?

OMF enough ventilation for my move?

Ben, I moved two Nucs 20 miles over the weekend. Paynes with mesh floor set over 4" high wood piecess in boot and windows open (very warm day). Water spray on setting out - no issues. I was hurried so didnt transfer to travel box (Mesh top). Your distance should not prove to arduous for them as...

    Bait Hive Loungers...

Two ‘bait’ hives set, and both have and have had, a knot of bees (50+) sitting in the entrance(s) for some weeks. Occasional bursts of flying/measuring and evening time all gone back from whence they came. Despite the occasional frenzy all very relaxed. My notion is that they are from hive(s)...
