    New hive

On that subject... I temporarily placed a QX on one hive, between two boxes, so there are drones above the QX. What are the issues from this?

Could I swap the Super and Brood Box?

One hive of mine is: SUPER BROOD They’ll need more room soon. I should have put on another brood box instead of a super at the time. But, anyway... Could I put an empty brood box on top... BROOD SUPER BROOD ....then later on in the summer, when B.B. fills up a bit, swap it with the...

Full hive, but no eggs yet. Can they still swarm?

I will add a super in a day or two. But since there was no eggs today, realistically there wouldn’t be a sealed QC for another 8 days at least. So, I just wondered what would happen in the short term if they fill both boxes.

Full hive, but no eggs yet. Can they still swarm?

A hypothetical question... I have a brood box and a super on one hive. BB and super are fairly full, but only a few sealed brood left in BB (as the new Queen has just emerged and not laying yet). The old brood areas are being filled up with stores. Anyway... I was just wondering what would...

    Will try that. Thanks.

How do I force Queen down to lay in bottom box?

Did artificial swarm lately. Hive setup is: Super Super (mostly full) Brood box Brood box has a few frames of drawn comb, and a couple frames of older brood/stores. Queen seems intent on laying in top super (newly drawn comb), while not laying in brood box. How do I get her to come down to...

    Api bioxal treatment

I didn’t treat them in autumn, as mite count was low, and didn’t feel the need to do it. The winter numbers just felt bigger now though, than other years. Must go back to my records and see if I recorded winter drop numbers.

    Api bioxal treatment

Is there a guide to what is an acceptable numbers of varroa drop after winter treatment? I’m thinking my numbers seemed a bit high. Over a 4 day period: Hive 1 = 228 mites (57 per day) Hive 2 = 255 mites (64 per day) Any thoughts?

    Api bioxal treatment

I carry out the api-bioxal trickling around new year, as I don’t use the vapouriser. Obviously to get at the main cluster in the Brood box, supers have to be removed temporarily. Would you recommend replacing the super(s) again straightaway after trickling, or keeping them off the hive for a...

    Paint colour on hives

Are there any colours that are recommended when painting hives or nucs? Or any colours to be avoided?

    Question about uniting colonies

Oh right. Should have explained. There is a Queen there (in hive B), but I’ll be taking her out before uniting.

    Question about uniting colonies

Hive A 6 Brood frames (with Queen) Hive B Full Brood box of stores Half a super (No eggs, Brood or Queen in colony) So.......... Put Hive B on the top of Hive A - with newspaper/Queen excluder in between. There shouldn’t be any issues with the larger colony being on top, should there?

Could a Queen mate this late in the year? (Mid October)

I had thought if it’s too late for a Queen to get mated, that I would combine this colony with a strong nuc I have (its Queen is laying well).

Could a Queen mate this late in the year? (Mid October)

Yes I still see drones in my hives. Mildish weather at the moment. Not sure about the coming days

Could a Queen mate this late in the year? (Mid October)

It’s mid October now. Could a queen successfully mate this late in the season?

Still significant mite drop after OA

You might get the odd older person still adhering to no meat on Fridays, but it’s largely forgotten now. Although it’s still tradition to eat no meat on Good Friday.
