    The latest bit of stupidity.

Yes I did. But this is the Manchester Evening News - not a quality newspaper!

    Changing to 14x12

Just do a version of a Bailey Comb Exchange. After 3 weeks, remove the 'deep' brood box. Then you have only one 'deep' frame in the 14 X 12 brood box, to work to the end of the box over the season. Indeed, there is the added bonus that the bees will create drone comb on that frame - which...

That works for me, too. Dusty

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Agreed. The Porter bee escape is a waste of time and effort. They are inefficient at best, clog up easily and deform frequently. Get a rhombus escape, divide it in two, cut it to fit in the corner at 45 degrees, and cut a 1.5" hole under each half. Works a treat - very speedy clearing. Dusty

Queen excluders & lower entrance colonies

so..... what will happen when you replace the hive stand? And, with respect, just how much experience do you have of Bailey comb exchanges? Your profile says you have no hives and joined the Forum last summer. Clearly, you do have some hives - but I would be interested in knowing more about...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

As ericA - but with the additional wrinkle, that I then put 9 frame castellations in the supers. I think you get just a bit more honey per super, and I like the convenience of loading a full 9 frame super into a 9 frame extractor. Dusty

    Who's having haggis tonight.

It sure was! It's something I do rarely - but it does round off a good meal, complementing a double espresso and a wee dram. Can't beat a splendid meal with great company. Dusty.

    Windows 10

I'm a dirty Mac man also. Strangely, the current copy of Which? reckons that the current version of the A1419 iMac, is inferior to the 2014 build. Not everything is progress. Dusty

    Who's having haggis tonight.

We celebrated Burns last night, for logistical reasons. Haggis from a small village butcher in Perthshire, accompanied by a few drams of Glenlivet, - tatties and neepes, of course. With a few drams of Glenlivet, watched 'The Angels' Share', had a rare cigar and washed it all down with a...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Just a thought. Could it be the wood has absorbed some of this lovely rain we've had? Dusty

ITMA was last on the Forum in September '15. Anyone know why? One of the saner people on the Forum. Dusty

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Thank you. helpful advice. They'll never give me the purple! The face never really fitted in the establishment. Didn't go to the right school or theological college. Upset too many people. Still it gives me ideas about what to do with the fruit press! Dusty

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Well, not exactly in my workshop, but I took a run over to Chester to buy a new fruit press at a really good price - intending to use it for our apples and for getting out all that residue honey hiding in cappings etc. When I got back home and unpacked it, I found out that it didn't contain a...

You mean my normal working gear? You can see me in that most Sundays. You would be very welcome. We specialise in sinners at Manchester Cathedral. Dusty

    Bbka convention 2016

Ok, so we can now book tickets to workshops, but the full programme isn't available, so you can't see what you're buying into. Some of the workshops have as few as 4 places. Anyhow, Kaz and I are booked into things we fancy. https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/britishbeekeepersassociation Dusty.

    Frame Assembly

But how strong does it need to be? I'm pretty certain I've never had a problem with any frame simply put together with frame nails - except where I've done it incorrectly. No need to over-engineer a simple job. To do so is down to personal need, not the needs of the task in hand. I'm happy...
