Hi all I'm looking at having two hives and was wondering how near you can keep them together or is there a set distance they need to be apart thanks in advance:thanks:

You will often see four hives to a pallet. With a two hive set up, consider a stand that could house three. The space between hives becomes handy for all those supers you will need to move when inspecting.

Brilliant thanks all

I have stands which hold two hives with one hive space between

:iagree:

Also handy for A/S's etc.
But as for how far apart you need to keep them - couple of inches if necessary

Over winter close enough to just get the lid on & off with ease. As such they give each other max shelter.
In summer further further apart, so as to make working them easier.

Me, 2 nationals and a Nuc in between to a standard 6'hive stand.

Gives good shelter to Nuc sandwiched between.

yes, but he did ask how close together he can keep them - doesn't mean it's very practical, although if you work them warm way, you can do it all from behind as bishop said to the dinner lady. I've never had hives a couple of inches apart (well, not for long anyhow) but I do have some in pairs about six to eight inches apart in summer, nucs sometimes even closer.

I often see them too close together Jenky when there is plenty of space around, why..? is it not easier to save clutter and space them out.

sometimes I think it's just a matter the size of the hive stand, there's no big deal if you're happy to work with them close together - seen Langstroths on a pallet - two pairs back to back with no big space between the pairs, but then there's plenty of space to move around the four hives, I suppose if you haven't much space it far more practical than having them further apart but then having not much space to move about.
It means you could have your four hives in a space about four feet square but then lashings of room all around
