    Crown board hole

To be honest I quite agree with u when it comes to the design of the hives and equipment. Old habits die hard. Roofs with the redundant vent is one.. Anothet example is I kept wondering why is the varroa tray in a standard hive floor always only rear access, why not front access which will...

    bee sting cream/medication

hi guys, great suggestions, thank you! Its primarily the face that i am more concerned as its really unpleasant when stung on face, get stung anywhere else don't really bother me much. Also the baseball hat worn in fencing veil also is a neat trick to prevent veil touching face where the bees...

    Crown board hole

oh i use it when i wanna clear a super, put the crown board above the QE, with porter bee escape, then lets the bees clear away into brood box, few days later go collect the supers for extraction which will be free of bees.

Super has been added but no interest

I think kighill's idea of removing the excluder for few days is OK because then the bees are more inclined to go up without the excluder. However just keep a close eye and once they had drawn a little bit ofthe super frames, make sure queen is down below in main brood box, and put on the QE...

    Crown board hole

Hi guys, do you all generally leave the crown board hole open on a hive or do you shut it with a block of wood or put the porter escape on it permanently? What are the pros and cons of leaving it open or closed? And is there a general answer of closing or leaving it open? I was thinking if left...

Musings on waxmoth - and storing supers

Does anyone knows how low temp frames needs to get to in a freezer before the wax moth dies? I got old fridge freezer but it's not going as cold as it needs to be, hence wondering if it's OK? I think I stuck thermometer in there its only about - 1degC, I recall freezers typically will go even...

    Endless Supersedure?

So sorry OP didn't mean to hijack, Nontheless keep us updated, for mine I had let them have the few QCs to move on and removed queen for now, let nature take its course. If it's a mistake I have to learn from it as it's down to being a newbie/greenhorn to beekeeping. Sent from my CLT-L09...

    Endless Supersedure?

Yeah did a course last year. This colony was originally from an overwintering nuc with about 3 frames of bees. In early March the brood expanded I then housed in full hive. April onwards I demareed, hence the introduction of 2nd brood box. When demareeing as its my first season I don't have...

    Endless Supersedure?

There are about 6 frames of brood out of 11, there are alot of empty cells without eggs. This hive was requeened and supposedly mated 3 weeks ago as she had been laying fine until last Friday when I first noticed 2 queen cells which I removed and alot of honey bound frames on 2nd brood box which...

    Endless Supersedure?

OK, I am facing with the same problem I thought the hive was honey bound as I extracted the top brood box because it was full of honey. This colony had a newly mated queen which I thought its happy days for the season, first sign of eggs was 3 weeks ago today. Today I found about 7 to 8 queen...

    Calibrating refractometer

i got the same ATC one too. its fairly accurate on its own. i tried calibrating to olive oil from LIDL which i thought its 26.5 to 27 but its wrong. in the end i brought it to my beekeeping association, borrowed the asociation's proper calibrated heavy duty refractometer that is factory...
