Can I use the cigarette lighter from my car with the necessary extension?
Obviously I would keep the engine running to avoid depleting the car battery. I have read several threads on the forum and each has suggested using a car battery but if I can use the cigarette lighter for power it would surely work out cheaper than buying and lugging around a battery. I have an out apiary but can drive right up to the hives.

straight off the car battery would be just as easy and not risk blowing any fuses.

I used to drive the car up to the hives and clip straight onto the car battery with the engine running

Considering people are carrying batteries, would you need to run the engine? A reel of flex would be handy to connect if the hives are too far to reach.

Overkill really. I was vaping eight hives at the time and was worried i'd flatten the battery and couldn't get the car out of the field....I don't know anything about cars or batteries :(

Its not overkill Erica it is being sensible, a good condition battery should be ok but the winter weather takes its toll on many old batteries, why risk flattening the battery and getting stuck, either way you are doing no harm whatsoever running the engine while vaping, unless you are doing it in your front room or garage, then carbon monoxide may be a problem.

Depends on the battery, better safe than sorry.
I have a battery on an old fishing trolley, I charge that with jump leads from the truck.
Truck battey went just before christmas, try pushing 2 1/4 tons of dead weight.
Automatic so it can't be bump started.

Cigarette lighter contacts are not the best. Easier to buy a pair of strong crocodile clips to go straight onto the battery terminals.

A 45AH car battery will do 14 hives and only be less than 25% discharged (assuming it started fully charged).. so unless you have a smaller battery. or it is undercharged or lots of hives.. the car battery will work perfectly well. Just ensure you use thick cable connections as this minimises voltage drop.

I use a set of cheap jump leads with attached battery clips - these can be bought in any market/discount store for peanuts and will do the job very well.. Join two sets together (soldering is best) for additional length..
