Going through my stocks I have found 20 sheets of shallow unwired drone foundation. I must have ordered it in error at some stage thinking I was getting thin wax for cut comb. Can I run some wires along it so that it can eventually spin it out or can it be gently spun by hand without wiring?
I was hoping the wires would just get buried after the frame has been drawn.

If you wire fairly tightly to the foundation the bees will bury it in the comb as they draw it, I've done it off and on over the years and the frames extract just fine. You can also use fishing line if you don't have stainless wire and as long as its kept tight when fitted they will do the same.

You could wire the frame or the foundation, but i don't have wires in any of my shallow national frames at all, only in the bigger frames.

They bury the wires in my foundationless frames so they should have no problem burying them if they are alongside sheets of foundation.

If you look closely at the photo below you will see that they actually build along the wires to the edge of the frame and then attach the comb (to start with) at the point where the wire joins the frame. Clever girls.

Thanks everybody. I might just leave as is and keep the frames away From my husband and the motorised extractor. He managed to trash all the frames on the only occasion I let him do it :(
