I'm trying to tickle up the drone population in the area (and maybe focus where drone brood is in the hives) so I've decided to experiment with plastic drone foundation.

...in order to do my bit for mating in the area...

Where in the brood nest is it best to put drone foundation?

Thanks

BJD

Bees usually keepdrone brood at the periphery of the brood nest. But do you know if I had a really strong colony with lots of brood and bees I would put that frame right in the middle.

Better still .. put a drawn super frame in the brood nest - they will fill that with drone brood and build free comb on the bottom of the frame which will almost certainly also become drone comb ...

Indeed... many of my frames are foundationless anyway... I have done what you've suggested in the past, works well. I've just decided to experiment with a few plastic frames/foundations (brood and drone) so was wondering where I might plonk them.

It will be interesting how they react to plastic comb amongst their own wax - make sure you bump this thread when you know how it's going ...
