Hi everyone,

Was wondering where one can find 2nd hand beekeeping clothing?

I figured that there are an awful lot of retired beeks out there.

Is this something that is worth paying up for new, or are seconds perfectly acceptable?

Thanks in advance for your help.

H,

Yes I can say sherrif are worth it. A friend of mine had a veil that was so old when they saw it they gave him a new 1 free of charge. If your after a new 1 then check any show offers. I’ve had plenty of use out of mine they are great on repairs and have also used them with distinctly unhappy ahb

Hi Ian,

That explains why it is difficult to find any second hand ones on sale.

Can I assume that BB Wear would be similar?

Kind regards,

H,

So in short:

Don't bother with seconds and pay up for new as it will be one of those things that would be well worth it.

Incidentally is there much difference between their basic and premium products other than number of pockets?

Is it worth paying up for the premium ones? Or just get the standard ones?

How do you cope in high temps when all sealed in? Well worth looking at the ventilated suits available, they DO make a heck of a difference.

As someone just starting out I was hoping to minimise my spend until i get some income and have more than one hive.

Already spent more than i hoped and still much more spending before the end of the season.

Kinda trying to keep it all down to a minimum if I can.

I started off buying an ebay jacket for £35. Nine years later still going strong and no suit.. and no suit needed..

Ah, someone hoping for income from beekeeping. You will come out ahead some years. Others, you'd spend much more than you make. Treat beekeeping as you'd treat any other hobby, as something that you have to spend money on to really enjoy it. Anything you get from selling honey is a bonus.
And don't forget, buy cheap, buy twice. Or in my case, three times before I steeled myself to by a good bee suit.

As Swarm says go for a ventilated suit..i started with a cheap jacket type but the bees could sting through it which meant me having to wear a jumper underneath..when the sun got up in mid summer I was soaked to the skin with sweat and needed a shower after each inspection..now I have a ventilated three layer jacket which allows me to wear a tea shirt and work with the bees comfortably sweat free.

Well tbh at this stage just covering costs would be nice.

My ambitions are humble as am only looking for 2 or 3 or at most four hives in the next few years.

If I can get it to fund itself with some proverbial beer money over the next few years that would be great.

Ya, you're probably right but recall they were a few hundred pounds. Guessing in for a penny in for a pound.

Whom would you suggest?

Noticed some on Alibaba, anyone had experience of thwt?

H,

Have a look for OZarmour, lots on this forum, including myself have them and they are good, pricey but not £100's either . They sell direct on their website, through Amazon and Fleabay also.

Loads second hand as not so comfy???

Rare to see Sherriff's because propper beekeeperers hang onto them!!!

As this was requested in the beginner section: Please point the OP to the place where there are ‘loads second hand’, can’t seem to find any on the usual outlets?
From personal experience I find the Oz Amour very comfortable, in fact comfort is the main reason to buy one as they are designed to keep you cool during hot weather and are very sting proof, a bonus when dealing with some of the dreadful bees being passed around locally! Comfort and sting resistance was, probably the reason BB have copied it but charge almost three times as much. Sheriff will probably produce something similar in future
Excuse the spelling as I am quoting, but not sure how anyone is classed as a ‘propper’ Beekeeper by the suit they wear?

This may be feeding the forum Surrey (Cornish) troll who changes their forum name with underwear and I apologise for doing so.

To be correct, I said dreadful and never mentioned ‘Stingy’ bees in my last post.
Maybe try providing facts re uncomfortable, rather than this frankly silly response?

Personal experience of suits.
I have cheapo jackets from Simon the beek, which are great for quick inspections.
On my 2nd BBWear suit which is very good, except when dealing with ‘dreadful’ bees or hot weather.
An Oz Armour suit which after wearing a few days is very well made/designed, and although feels bulky when first put on is very comfortable.

Thanks for that I'll definitely look into those down under garments.

What's the uptake of Jackets versus full suits?

Do people start with suits relax and then buy jackets or is there an advantage to a suit?
