I posted a thread on Tuesdayhttps://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=39998
Basicaĺy set up a hive on the allotment put some frames with drawn comb in and left it. On Sunday saw a few bees checking it out. On Tuesday hive was very busy loads of bees coming and going like an established Hive. Didn't see any bringing in pollen.
Yesterday got up there a bit later sun was going down and still plenty of coming and going but not as much as Tuesday. Observed what appeared to be guard bees jumping on everything as it approached the entrance before letting them in. Saw one bee remove a dead one and drop it outside. Still couldn't see any bringing pollen in. About 2030 hours I had finished watering the plants and the hive had gone quiet. I opened it up for a peek and nothing!
There is no stores in the drawn comb so can't see what the bees would be robbing. Any ideas

Scout bees investigating an option for a new home. They will overnight in the prospective new home on occasion and will also "defend" it against scouts from other colonies. This would seem to be what you have observed.

Scouts may completely disappear from your hive if other scouts find a location the colony prefers. If the scouts are from a managed colony, intervention by a beekeeper in the form of swarm management may also lead to a disappearance of scouts from your hive.

Thanks for that, just looked so busy I thought they had moved in. Only puzzling thing was no sign of incoming pollen. I know bees scout out possible new homes but didn't realise so many scouts. Fingers crossed

A year or two ago, scout bees spent several days visiting a hive here in the home apiary and then what appeared to be a swarm moved in and stayed for two or three days. They decamped one afternoon, the following morning it was as though they had never been, then that afternoon one of the biggest swarms I have seen in Ireland arrived.

Today quite a bit of coming & going, saw a few loaded with pollen going in so lifted the lid for a quick look. 3 frames just to one side of centre had quite a few bees possibly about 1000 in total. A quick look couldn't see a queen but a few cells being filled. Seemed very placid and had no intention of stinging which is good.
Small cast swarm possibly? Do you think I should put a feeder on, sugar syrup possibly to help them out?

Still plenty of coming & going, lots of pollen going in. Still about 1000 bees over 3 frames. Found the Queen😀 Very nice striped one no mark so don't know if old or virgin Q, didn't mess around looking for eggs but plenty of cells filling with pollen.

No dont feed for 3 days, then as much you want to give them.

Whoa there. As much as you want could be a few gallons. Considering the availability of forage two or three litres of thin syrup will give them a comb building boost. It may not even be needed.

1000 bees and an unmarked queen? I would dummy the hive down to 3 to 4 frames and reduce the entrance to a couple of bees.
