I'm assuming it isn't essential based on its availability in France. I have no idea about the UK but it's hard to find ready-made hives that it comes with it or floors you can buy with it in place.

It's even more of an arse to be honest trying to build your own hive with the serious lack of available materials over here.

A lot of internet companies will ship materials like this to France ...doesn't usually cost that much more than postage to the UK these days ...

Varroa Mesh

HI from a fellow brit. I have seen the Dadant hive that is put on top of a varroa mesh by Nicot (hope its ok to use company names). Which you can get at bee shops or the internet.
 
If you're still pursuing poly hives, the Swienty floor comes with mesh built in and a sliding Varroa fall tray underneath.

Hi, I've seen it in France at a store called leroy merlin. It wasn't correct size (it was 500x250) but it was a suitable gauge. A couple joined would suit most hives though.
It was about €5 a sheet by the way.
