Afternoon , on quite a few occasions now I’ve United 6 frame nucs without smoke or newspaper simply because I haven’t had any to hand .
Method Q+ on the bottom Q- above a nuc extension of comb preferring the Q- colony to not have any means to make queen cells reconfigure a week later most of the time I’ve found eggs in the nuc extension so they get put bellow and the extension goes above as a super or if they aren’t strong enough the extension gets removed .

Has anyone else tried this?

Thanks

So that’s a hopelessly queenless colony on top of a queenright colony with an extension between them?
Never tried that.
Always keep air fresher at the apiary.

Yes not necessarily hopelessly queenless any after a week to 10 days works as long as they can’t make cells
I don’t like to use air freshener
