Two out of my four hives have still got supers on them and they contain a goodly quantity of honey. I would like to get them off soon so that I can get on with a mite treatment but the trouble is that they are mostly only about 50% capped and I know if I extract this then the honey will struggle to get below 20% moisture. The bees are showing no inclination to either eat it, move it or cap it.
The hives are brood and a half and there is also plenty of stores under the QE.
Suggestions please.

Do the shake test. Hold frame flat over hive and give a hard shake. If nectar comes out it is not ripe. Ultimate is to check with refractometer, which I do when I get the frames home. Quite a number of my frames were not capped this year. Water content stil 18.5 or 19.

give them some more time, there is no rush to do the mite treatment unless you have DWV

:yeahthat:

Check the water content. I've just processed the last of my 2016 honey and feared it may have absorbed some moisture as I lost a bucket earlier this year that fermented.

Anyway, the honey in a bag in a bucket was 18.5% and the other just in an Old bucket was 18%. Both lovely.

If you put your clearer boards on first thing in the morning before the bees start flying this will of given the bees overnight to work on any honey gathered the previous day.
Hopefully the uncapped honey will then have a low enough moisture content to allow safe extraction without fear of fermentation.
