Should you grease the board during the treatment of varroa mites?

I take it Vaseline is used?

I was advised that if it is dry the dislodged mites can wander off. The grease holds them in place. I use cheap cooking oil as I find it easier to wipe over.

Nope. its done by a pin in the map I believe. decided by the SBI and RBI who gets tested but for some reason I was chosen to have the VMD with her when the test was done.



Felt a bit like I was being asked questions that if I had given incorrect answers I would get prosecuted by them. It was not a nice experience that was at the end of a really bad season with disease, colony losses and poor crop.

Best practice is to minimise any risk of the honey supers coming into contact with any treatment.

I use Vaseline on the hives I test for mites but anything non toxic, sticky and easily cleaned off afterwards will do the job.

After having a Visit from the Veterinary Meds directorate, to do a test on my honey, and discussions with them about what and what is not classed a treatment, please make sure that if you do these, make sure you fill out the documentation found on Beebase for treatments added as they are treatments and records must be kept about them for 5 years.

Hives clean, Bee cleanse, Bee Guard, Bee-safe, Mycostop, Hive Alive, Nosevit, Nosevit plus, B401 , sugar role (as not a feed),flour or chalk dusting Hivemakers thymol mix and generic oxalic dyhradte

and what about feed suppliments as they have the power to take samples of feed as well

Hi Hivemaker just a quick question, I have found some thymol pads left over from last September. They have been kept in airtight takeaway containers will they still be ok to use or will they be safe to put another 20ml of your Thymol solution. or should I just throw away and start again.

I look through a lot of other peoples hives and can honestly say Varroa is the biggest problem I find, non treatment usually ends up with no bees other than splits and swarms, the original dwindles and collapses.
Seen 100's of diminished colonies, colonies struggling to build up, bees with hardly any wings. Not pretty.

The VMD boys are just protecting the food that we eat.

Lucky as I didn't treat at all last year, nothing. I had a baby I was looking after last year and due to this I didn't get to do anything much for my bees other than inspect and feed in the Autumn, and didn't even use the thymol mix in that. so as of last year there was nothing, mind you I then had 60% losses in winter and think it was due mainly to Varroa.

This year nothing as yet as I'm trying to decide what products to use which wont get me in trouble with them, but I do have a sheet even though its empty atm.

Do you see earwigs anywhere in the hive?
Earwigs and other things eat the varroa so any on the board are a free meal.
