Bit slow today...

Back in the mid nineties, I was working for a company that had a non-executive director whose father had lived in Shanghai, in the days of the International Settlement. ( I was surprised when I looked it up just now that it lasted until 1943). The non-exec, (lets call him Harald) went to school in England, but during the holidays travelled to Shanghai to be with his father. I don't know the full details of the trip, but the last leg of the journey was certainly by flying boat, which used to land in Shanghai harbour. There, Harald was met by his fathers factotum, to travel back to the house in the company sedan chair.

There was slightly more to the story, but that was the relevant part here...

Must have been memorable, the very different mystic East. I used to see an old mothballed international flying boat on the slipway in Cowes. Huge for its era.
The sedan may be green and somewhat regal, but a horse drawn trap or cart would seem smoother.
There are still huge numbers of human powered vehicles around the world, pedalled rickshaws etc. I have never felt comfortable or safe in them the few places it was the only option, Calcutta stands out in my memory...
Many now in London, for the tourist they provide on-board music, lights and I assume an almost equally memorable experience...

Was this mothballed flying boat a Solent, owned by Aquila Airlines ,Southampton ?

I made a stupid mistake on line two - moving two letters from their rightful positions. I don’t know why.

VMs elimination tactics must be better than mine...

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Both lucky and hard work here. I thought for a long time but only got one word that would fit and sure enough, it was a winner !

I don't know, never asked around; it was under a fitted cover and probably no engines, certainly no propellors. Twin engined.
Or might have been Short Sunderland? I have had a look at old pictures and they both look about right. Only specific histories or pics of the Princess in Cowes which was much larger and built in E. Cowes at one time, 1950s I think.
