With a square Dadant depth hive, I can fit 14 frames with 1.25 inch (31.75 mm) end bars. The hive has interior measure of 18 5/16 (465.14 mm) by 18 5/16 (465.14 mm) by 11 5/8 (295.25 mm) inches. The frames add up to 17.5 inches which means I have barely enough room to fit in a thin divider to run them as 2 queen colonies. I could only fit 13 frames if I used Langstroth 1 3/8 frames and there would not be enough room for a divider.

1.25 inch frames are not for the beginner. Bees are a lot less forgiving of beekeeper error on them. They have to be wired so the comb hangs perfectly straight and they have to be maintained to prevent drone cells being built in edges and corners of the frame.

The hive in question is a standard national with Hoffman frames. So 11 frames with dummy boards either side as it stands.

Thanks for advice folks.
