Don't have this problem with a long MD hive.
 
We did both out hives end of last month (only our second winter) and they seemed pretty chilled about it, but there was two of us, i lifted the hive, while my better half quickly move the supper from on top to underneath, both were behaving as nothing had happened 10 mins latter. the only thing we have to do to them next is remove the apivar strips at the end of the month.

That's a good idea but I can't do that as the number of hives I have has gone up this year and I have no equipment left. I have five hives now and TBH I'd be quite happy if that dropped to three this winter so as to free up some stuff for swarm control next year.

As above an early sale of a nuc/colony and off to the spring convention for any bits of kit that take your fancy and generally make your life easier.
