Hive Type
National
Number of Hives
20+ nucs
I have 2 nationals single brood
I split 16kg bag of apinvert syrup into the hives
Which is 16lbs each it was gone in 2 days I couldn't believe it wow they can put that stuff away .

They will sharp stash it leaving a laying Queen nowhere to lay, i myself is just topping them up for now with 1:1 to keep them ticking over, not too much to fill the brood frames but enough to keep them going in this long spell of intermittent bad weather.

Can they not store 1:1 or just less likely to?

my question is, why are you feeding and why so much?

Yes but they can eat it much quicker than 2:1 as they do not have to add much water, which means they do not store as much.

If I can clarify - the bees are still active and needing to consume syrup day to day, so giving them 1:1 saves them fetching water in order to eat it. 2:1 on the other hand saves them the energy of drying off moisture when you want them to store it (particularly when the weather cooles down) AND it means you can get more sugar in a given feeder size. I believe they'll store any excess irrespective of its strength.

If you are asking me i have had to feed two nucs with new Queens after they where robbed to the point of starvation, one Queen had stopped laying through lack of stores but she is back on track now and laying ok.

Little or nowt going in for the past six weeks here, Ireland has had pretty poor weather as well.
Different areas, different conditions. Unlike others, this hasn't been a good year for me, they filled supers in June and been living on them since.
