Ok, we ( well most) have collected swarmS and the BBKA insurance offer some third party insurance, i am only too happy to collect a swarm and rarely ask for even "expenses" for free easy access bees

But what insurance cover do you lot have for those chimney and cut outs, two issue really if we charge a fee then the BBKA insurance is invalid, for as simple one ok "expense" :rolleyes: yes I AM FINE UP TO 10M HIGH

BUT what about those that are reaLly a commercial operation, scaffold, chimney pot removal...cutting joist, cavity wall ....so what insurance do you have to cover ? third party £5m , risk assessment, CDM regulation, WORKING OFF A LADDER ETC ,personal injury insurance or do you lot just take a risk?

Just i have a chimney job about 20m up, i said to them leave it to spring ( hoping it will die out)....but even if they arrange a scaffold, where do you get third party and personal INJURY INSURANCE TO COVER IT

I DONT WANT TO BE SUE FOR MY HOUSE NORE LOOSE MY INCOME

You could be employed or possibly sub-contracted by a pest control company... and benefit from their comprehensive insurance and expertise?...

... but then unless the swarm has settled on a convenient bush, considering how cheap is is to buy a nuc of certificated bees.. why bother risking your neck?

I do not wish to discuss BBKA insurance as I am not within the inner circle of any such organisation and privy to what seems to me to be such closely guarded information; however I would presume the cover it gives is very very minimal otherwise it would not be included in annual membership, without the option to opt out!
Most "Club" insurances ( British Sub-Aqua Club etc) offer a public liability for members, however I have never heard tell of any claims or settlements.
I would not expect that BBKA insurance to cover any swarm collection operations away from your own premises, and most certainly would check with them what exactly it is you are / are not covered for!

MM, I think this very much depends on perspective. I don't have insurance other than the 3rd party BBKA. I would not put myself in a position where injury is a significant possibility or where my experience means I could be a danger to myself or others. Beekeeping is a hobby for me, not an income, If I don't enjoy it I don't do it - same goes for swarm catching. Swarm catching is a service I am happy to provide but wont at the point where the benefit to the stranger becomes more than the personal threat to me.

Ground = great
Step ladder = OK
Rung ladder = if I must / working area is practical
Any form of high wire act / gymnastics = leave it the the insured and paid professionals!

You always have the right to say no, this may be one of those times.

If in doubt leave it out.

I looked at some photos of what I had been doing, perched on a 30ft ladder on top of some 40feet of scaffold, made I might add by a welder not even "proper" scaffold.

I felt an icy chill down my back and gave the scaffold away so as to never be tempted again to be so stupid.

:iagree: Thirded. When I look back at some things I've done, its's sheer luck I'm still here. It's never worth it.
