Just got back from Tesco (Boston): 5 kg Tate & Lyles finest on the shelves (or it was until I came along) at £3.96 - was £4.50. Stock up while you can ...

Was paying £0.72 at Makro last year per kilo of Tate & Lyle cane sugar.

....I know the weather's bad but in't it a bit too soon to already be thinking of winter feeding?

Bookers were doing 25kg for £19:95 a few weeks ago.

bookers on offer at 72p kg but you have to buy 50 kg to get offer untill 16-4-2013

Thanks for the heads up. Will pop in after work. I'm sure the bees are sick of sugar and fondant by now but if they can just keep up till spring..........a couple of months yet then...;-)

Errrr - which makes it slightly more expensive than Tescos ...

Plus there are a lot more Tescos around the country than Makro :)

Yes, i stated that after the post for the price i paid last year at Makro that was cheaper. As stated. Errrrrrr

It's amazing how sugar prices fluctuate as if they know that beekeepers are about to do a bit of feeding, they must look for long periods of rain and inflate the prices.

Unlikely to be influenced by beekeepers alone :). At UK level autumn is also preserving and jam making time. Cake making has been growing past few years. Unexpected demand raises prices to keep pace with the supply chain. But sugar is a world commodity so influenced year to year by harvest yield and longer term by growing consumption in Asia. Basic economics of supply and demand overlaid with local logistics and contract volume issues.

Countryfile had an item on sugar about 5 weeks ago. A lot of the sugar in the UK is produced in the UK!!

Just back from Costco, who have 10kg bags of Tate & Lyle granulated for £6.70 or 15 x 1kg bags for £10.35 (=69p/kg).

That's significantly cheaper than Booker (79p/kg) or Lidl (86p/kg)

The fact that £5 bags of sugar are £3.99 in Tesco makes going on a special trip to Costco not worth it in my opinion. Saving 13p a kg? If you had to make a 10 mile round trip you'd have to by more than 10kg just to pay for the fuel - let alone the extra time. When you also consider you can collect loyalty points at the supermarket and a 5p/litre of fuel voucher when you spend over £50, it just doesn't seem worth it... unless you're in the market for say 50+kg.

Got my sugar in the garage, 300kg, should be enough for 20 hives. Got it at a price I cant beat, just need to take it when its available.
