Having lost all three of my colonies at the end of last year I now need to start over. Any suggestions as to the best place to get a starter colony?

Sorry abut your bees, shrekfeet - could try the Bees for sale/wanted section on the forum? :)

Find another beekeeper and break down and weep! Surely there's someone round there who will help you out

Ouch! Sorry to read that. As above, if you're a member of your local BKA, chances are they've a swarm collection officer. If so, have a word. One of my strongest colonies came to me last June as a 3000 bee cast from a colony that's been in a nearby chimney for years. As luck would have it, the virgin queen had 5 good days to get well mated & she laid late & started again early. They're lovely bees. Good luck.
