Creating a buzz: Using bees to pull people out of poverty
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-36702997

"One example of bad practice Mr Naofel is preventing is bees being fed sugar.
This increases a hive's production, but results in a bland honey lacking the flavours you get if the bees are required to harvest various nectars."

A worthy factor to consider - are you prioritising honey quantity or quality?

But it sounds as if the yield is less than 10lbs per hive per year.

How lucky we are.

Yep but what are the Germans doing differently to us?

Just inspected a double brood box poly Nuc I put a smallish colony in 3 weeks ago.

Cleaned up some wild comb of stores off the bottom of the feeder, my first taste of honey from my own bees and it's delicious.

Come on the girls . . . . . . . .

Mine is in full sun all day, well when we get some sun , last year however we had some seriously hot weather for a short spell so i placed a sun screen on top just to be on the safe side, i was probably wasting my time but it made me feel better.

I've seen hives in Greece in full blazing sun all day and the guys don't provide any shade either.
