Is it possible to use a queen excluder in a skep? I was thinking of something vertical to one side of the entrance. I've never used a step, but thought it might be interesting.

I'm assuming my neighbour will get at least one swarm this year, which I will help them out with by re-housing for them. So, if the QX divides the skep vertically in two, when I put the swarm into the 'home' (as opposed to 'collection') skep, then brood will go one side and honey the other, and it wouldn't particularly matter which was which.

Does this sound feasible?

This was the basis for the old collateral hive attempting to make bees store honey lateral to their brood nest. Time has shown that they don't like to do this and prefer to store honey above the brood nest. So get a super for your skep, they used to use supers for skeps so shouldn't be hard to find or make one.

But why keep bees in a skep anyway?

And this is a picture of a "super" to go on top of it.

Well you learn something new every day only, often thought about getting a skep but now it looks like I'll have to get a few supers too. I wouldn't know what the hell to do with it once its up and running, probably just look at it and watch a swarm depart. I wonder if there is a demand for a poly skep with supers

You don't need a poly skep, just put the bees into an empty poly box and let them get on with it. You could cheat and put frames in a super on top. You could still watch them swarm away :)

I think I must be bored, after moving a hive in the apiary today and watching the bees out collecting pollen has got me itching again [emoji4][emoji219]

I think that was a bit tongue in cheek redwood, but for those interested in skep beekeeping this series of films on you tube is fascinating. I know it has been mentioned on the forum in the past!
