Primers and undercoats for hives

I know and have read a lot of good info on painting hives here but.....

I am looking to use Cuprinol shades as the top coat...

Do I need to prime and undercoat first or not???

If I need to do I need to use oil based ?

What are the best ones to use?

That 1 question in my head has turned into 3

No. Just slap on two coats.

They say you can use Cuprinol clear if starting on bare wood. That product used to be certified as OK to use in beehives, but not for last few years. I do not think the formula has changed that much just did not bother to put in for recertification
