Normal Warre hive (30cm square) wouldnt be that distance off the ground, on legs like those.

Oddly, I quite like them.

I think that from the bees perspective, a big hollow tree trunk with mod cons.

For me, this appears a more natural hive configuration.

Would I use one? probably not, but I am definitely not saying never.

A thought to come back to me in retirement I think.......

If anyone is interested Will Messenger is talking about the Stewartson hive at the North of England Beekeeping Convention this Saturday April 2nd @ the Hancock Museum Newcastle Upon Tyne. Ticket will be available on the day. www.nebees.org for details.

The rounder an object is the more stable it is in wind due to less surface area. Probably top heavy, but them most hives are. It would be more stable than other hives so maybe that is a plus point.

I must admit that I am tempted to build one of the hexagonal ones. Dont have the machine to cut the slots for the ends of the bars to sit in, which, I think,, also nip the ends of the bars together to hold the starter strip in the slot.. I'd just put a rebate there instead..........

bundle of sawn timber from B&Queue......
