OAV and supers

Couple of my hives have all their stores in the super. I don't mind leaving them the honey, but I do want to do an OAV treatment before too long.

I assume OAV with the super on ruins the honey for human use. If I vape them and let them eat the honey can I reuse the frames next year?

Otherwise I'm going to remove the supers and have to feed them to get them through the OAV'ing period.
 
No it doesn't ruin it. Levels are back to normal in no time. However, you are not supposed to do it because it says so on the packet of Apibioxal. When the bees are flying take the super off and put it aside. Vape the hive. Put super back. I don't even bother closing the entrance which is reduced at this time of year, anyway but I do close the floor off, of course.
 
because they add sugar to the oxalic, you probably get carcinogens over the comb from the sugar combustion. Same reason why you shouldnt eat burnt or even browned toast.:)
 
If toast is carcinogenic then surely the browned top and sides of a loaf are also carcinogenic -- so that's one in favour of cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off -- unless of course, cucumber is poisonous.

I expect the toxic level for toast is reached when the consumer eats 1500 pieces of toast in five days, or something equally daft. I have eaten toast all my life and if, at some point now I'm well over 60 years old, I get cancer, I feel I will not in all honesty be able to blame it on my lifetime toast consumption levels. I thiknk there are more serious causes for cancer which can be avoided -- pause here for a sip of wine.

I like science, I really do, but sometimes scientists do themselves no favours by coming up with off-the-wall stories like this, whether they are scientifically correct or not.

WHAT...planet are you on Derek? That is rubbish.Sugar combustion...LOL.
 
obviously the planet were sugar oxidises at temperatures above 160C it tastes nice its called caramel
And when you vaporization OA in the hives the temperatures get that high?

I note in the link that even there they do not categorically state that acrlyimide causes cancer, just that it might. It also references that rodents given high doses may succumb to cancer so I refer back to my 1500 pieces of burnt toast. I doubt I have eaten 100th of that number of pieces of burnt toast in my entire life. I think I'll risk the odd dark slice now and again. :)

If you take the super off for 15 minutes or so I presume you're not clearing it first. In which case, don't you miss a lot of a mites that are on those bees?

I'm minded to clear and remove the super, then feed them just enough to get to the ivy flow. I can reassess their food levels after that. A bit more fussing and faffing getting the last supers off, but hopefully that'll get them in to winter in decent condition.

It doesn't matter - sublimation works by leaving a fine layer of OA micro crystals over all surfaces (including the bees) these crystals are still effective for days afterwards so any flying bees/bees not in the hive quickly get covered in OA as they move over the comb.
It has little to do with 'gassing' the hive.

I find that marmalade (home made - natch) neutralises any carcinogenic compounds. And also tastes good.

This is interesting and relevant to lots of 'what is really happening' questions and the way research is badly reported in the media. It goes back to 2000.
Acrylamide was considered as a carcinogen before this. A rail tunnel in Sweden had water ingress and the engineers sealed it with a compound containing acrylamide. It ran into ponds and local animals were affected. Swedish public health looked for acrylamide in local residents and found high levels. They used as a control group a similar village in a different area. The residents of the control group had similar levels. Research found that acrylamide was found in foods heated at high temperatures, especially in carbohydrate rich foods. This includes bread. There seems no correlation between consuming foods with high levels of acrylamide and stomach cancer in the wide population.
