I've populated 4 apideas today for the first time. I put them in the shed which is nice and dark. I just retrieved a couple of supers that need painting, and the noise from them is quite loud - should they be making so much noise, or will they calm down over the next 24-48 hours?

what sort of noise
crunching cornflakes
or wing beating buzzing noise.

crunching cornflakes is the noise of a new colony setting up
home.

They will 'roar' (quietly) as they are Q- and shut in.

Hopefully you have given them some fondant in the feeder compartment.
But you'll also need to 'mist' the front vent with plain water to keep them alive (especially if you've given them granulated sugar as food). I give them a spray at least twice a day, and shut mine in the cool (and completely dark when the door is shut) cupboard under the stairs. If they are in a hot or draughty place, they may need more water ...

Mine do quieten down, but still get agitated (and noisy) when I open the cupboard door showing them a glimmer of light.

Yes, plenty of fondant and misting. But they're waving their little arms out through the vent - probably as a result of the light when I open the door. That shed may be too warm too - I'll move them to a cooler one just to be sure.

every beekeeper needs a cellar for these things. As most of us aren't blessed with one, then somewhere cool and dark (back of the garage?) is OK.

Yes they complain a bit until opened and as soon as they are, the noise subsides.
