So, having had a inhabited hive for a few days and observing it becomes increasingly interesting watching them, but then they do something different and it makes you think… ooh, what's wrong… or what's going on…?

After the dead queen drama from tuesday (they now have a frame of brood inc queen cells etc) this evening is slightly curious.

Normally they all go to bed… once they're in, they're in. However this evening there are good 20 bees or so crawling around, very slowly or just standing there, on my mini landing board.

If I new better I would say there was a busy party inside and they had come out for some fresh air or a cigarette… but I see no smoke.

Curious… and, as always in beekeeping, slightly concerned… I get the feeling that a lot of things in beekeeping are done by feel… and this feels a little wrong.

Fascinated to hear your thoughts/answers.

thanks

Interesting. Only my 5th day with actual bees in the garden but I fully understand the need to keep going back and checking on them. My wife already knew I was mad so that helps.

As for partys, perhaps I have the goody goody girls but no sign of that. They'll have to step up their game to keep up with us.

Seriously, as it's been a hot and humid evening here, perhaps they had just stepped outside to cool off a little?

Mine are always out on the landing board ... if it's a dry and warm night often a lot of them outside hanging about .. probably taking a rest from honey ripening ! I hope .. they can get back to work - tea break over !!

After a long hot days work yesterday, all my girls were inside at 9.30pm either doing ripening work on night shift or sleeping the sleep of the just. I was replenishing the water in the bucket of stones and moss when one guard bee came out, inspected me and went back in again.

Seems watching bees, particularly as a beginner' is a bit like interpreting a text from a recent ex… examining every tiny tiniest of nuance… but what does it MEAN!? Haha

Thanks alldigging!

Got over 60 odd pages here… are you able to give me a quick go to page?

Ahh haha.. I totally knew someone was going to say something like that. Cheeky bugger!

I'll give it a read… fortunately I work in Waterstones, so get half price books, so I think my bookshelf might be getting swiftly heavier! Nicer than reading off a screen.

Yeah read it all. it's not long.

Mm Half price books. I'd need half price shelves too!
:)

On a really hot night you may find a few hundred bearding out of the front of a hive and down towards the ground. Don't panic it is normal. Their way of air conditioning!

Gosh!

Good to know… would be easy to panic watching that.. it would look some freaky midnight swarm!
