I am on the firedept for the sole reason of having access to the thermal imaging cameras. They do work good for locating colonies in structures. I usually use a stethoscope, but have had a few where they were too well insulated to hear them through the wall, and that is where the camera comes in.
 
I always thought thermal imaging needed line of sight hence the dude in the piccy only showing half his body?
 
It will show warm areas on the wall, plasterboard, whatever the bees are behind, Hachi.

I just love this toy...

below is bumbles in a soffat board, image from the drive, outside looking up to the gutter level.

 
just read up on the FLIR for the smart phones, these are MUCH sharper images than my SEEK, and a tad cheaper.

Still impressed though.
