I had no idea a NUC costs £200 dear god! But yeah, I’ll join association and do a course before I invest anything in NUC’s or hives. Had been thinking of a ‘flow’ to get started but concerned that if honey is thick I won’t get it out?! Guess that’s something for later down the road though.
As everybody is saying, you will do yourself a great favour if you get a good book ( use the search facility on here for threads about beginner books) . Have a look at a few of the big suppliers web sites. Request their brochures, which in themselves are good for reference.
Wait until after your course and after chatting with some local beeks . Having equipment compatible with the majority of your neighbours can be very helpful.
As to buying stuff, wait for the sales. If you go for wood, go for flat pack. Many prefer poly.
You could be lucky and attract a swarm, but then the provenance is unknown. When I started, the association promised everybody who completed the course a free nuc. Lots had dropped out by that point ! That in itself says a lot. This lark is not easy, but if you click with it, is so enjoyable.
I have never bought bees, and often give nucs to those just starting out, if they are serious about it.
