Hi - I got a whole brood box, ie not just a nuc, from someone who has given up beekeeping. I've set it in place for a couple of days to settle in. I intend adding a second brood box with new frames in order to make a second colony as I have two hives, saw this done a few years back and did it once before.
Would folk here add the second box above or below the first (is it possible they won't find it if it's on top)? Any other comments appreciated.
cheers
Jon

I would demaree, if I wanted a second colony. When a good queen cell is obtained, split them. Simple as that.

Messing around adding a second box as you are proposing, may, or may not result in a second colony until much later in the year. Get the job done now or buy in a queen as an alternative.

So , of your two alternatives my choice is below, but not as you are thinking!

:iagree:
going to double brood, relying on them to build up in a timely fashion then a walkaway split is a bit hit and miss - Demarree for me, could even get a spare nuc to sell on to cover some of the costs you will incur as a two hive beekeeper!
