Bearing in mind the reports in this weeks media on the research on the effect of neonicotinoids on bees, and its widespread use in the UK on crops such as Oilseed rape do we place the hives on the crop or not? . Any views?

Yes, but I might be cautious of leaving the bees to over-winter on OSR honey.

They will go there anyway, if the crop is anywhere near, so might just as well reduce the flight times (and less distance to get lost?). All but the queen will be dead shortly and she does not leave the hive on her own.

For many the point is mute. If you have OSR with 2 miles or so then the bees will decide not the keeper .........
