I've got a feeling it is the capillary action. There are no holes in the metal. I hope I have solved the problem because the wood underneath is what I believe is called OSM board, and i think its a bit like chipbaord when it comes to water.

My vents are not the mesh covered holes but more of a piece chiselled out towards the top, running under the metal edge of the roof, covered on the inside with gauze.

Think there covered with snow now, its been snowing heavy this morning here.

When the plate has snow on it, and then it comes warmer, the cold plate condensates moisture onto under side. Really human houses have rottened when water drops down into insulations.

Snow keeps the plate cool and it gathers moisture.

In human houses nowadays we use under rain cover a fibrous sheet which prevent water droplets to drop down into upper insulation.
