Shake the bees into the bottom box and put in a QX

I meant in the spring when you want your top shallow back as a honey super

Actually not always. Twice this year it was "obvious" by the behaviour which half the queen was in. After going through them several times it was obvious she was in hiding. So the obvious thing to do was to go through the agitated half and of course, there she was.

Bees do nothing invariably after all.
