I was advised by a local beekeeper to place a matchstick on each corner between the brood box and crown-board over winter to aid in preventing damp.

Anyone here practice such a method?

The BBKA magazine have a contributor called the Forager whose views on matchsticks caused much entertainment earlier this year.

The kindest summary of the consensus reached was that he/she was an ignorant out of date behind the times numpty.

matchsticks are for lighting smokers.

OMF open. no top ventilation. solid crownboard. 50mm kingspan. sorted.

think about it: 2.5mm gap all round =4x.25x46=46cm2 vent in top of hive.

General Concensus is a dangerous man he has led people astray all over the world. In one notable instance he got Barabbas off the hook and gave Jesus the thumbs down!
This case is not quite so serious and probably won't make any difference either way.

I think think he may contribute to the the WBKA magazine under the name Grumpy old Beekeeper. He thinks closing the crown board is a heresy and states that OMF floors were an invention to combat varroah and the root of all this foolishness about air circulation.
Also implies that closed crown boards are the cause of global warming or some such thing:D

YES of course... BBKA module 7 sub section 1942 Beekeeping Myths ( Revised)

We all know that the cause of global warming must be neonicotinoids as they were introduced as global warming became an issue.

When this thread reaches 50 replies (about another hour) it will self ignite. :p

I think he had shares in his brothers company (Brayant & May) and with the invention of the clipper lighter tried to drum up alternative uses for a match stick to keep profits up.

So I will start the list of other alternative uses

Tile spacers

Toothpick

If even our friends across the Tamar (sorry ICHI) are up to speed on not using matchsticks then the beek the OP refers to must be VERY out of date.

Looks like a 'no' then.

Have a guest speaker at the BKA tonight (Clive de Bruyn). Don't think I will be mentioning matchsticks. :willy_nilly:

i use this method i believe it's a good practice that has been passed on to me by my mentor
Waveride its a very cheap and practical way to do it
