Thanks everyone for the comments, PM's after my last post.

As an update, both hives have calmed now and the carnage has stopped. There were not many additional bodies this morning and by the afternoon all had been cleared.

I counted the varroa drop this afternoon on both hives. The first hive had 47 on the internal board that has been in since the start of treatment. I did open the entrance fully. The other hive, that was a collected swarm in June, does not have an integral drop board so I had placed a piece of ply on the gravel floor. This showed 19 mites. This is inconclusive as some may have missed the ply when they fell and could of been carted away as it sits on the ground!

However, I am a little happier today with the treatment as I can see some progress.
