I'd suggest going cheap(ish) initially, all in one or seperates. Then once you have your bees and are convinced you will be keeping them, you will probably want a second suit for interested friends so splash out on a good one (sheriff or bbwear) for yourself. I still use my 5 year old ebay one one occasions, and it works fine, but much prefer my normal bbwear.
 
Well Guys ... all tis great advice and she's not listening ... last activity two minutes after the original post ... hope she comes back ! Still ... all grist to the mill - plenty of other would be beekeepers about - although we've had the debate about clothing a few times before ...

Yes, indeed. We may not always make a comment to let you know we're here, but I, for one find these sorts of threads very useful. So thanks to everyone who takes the trouble to answer beginner questions :)
 
I think a detachable hood hood is a must have feature
My washing machine eats hoods (even tucked inside the overall) so a hood which zips off for hand washing is a boon
I've also found that the more expensive the suit the better the vision through the veil
